Support is an important part of any community, and I just wanted to offer my thanks and gratitude to both our Ubuntu Forums and Ask Ubuntu communities. The Ubuntu Forums has seen incredible growth and interest (over a million users) over the years with a wonderful community forming, and Ask Ubuntu has provided a fantastic place to ask questions and get help.
Both are excellently managed and governed communities that provide a great on-ramp for our community learn about Ubuntu, meet other Ubuntu fans, and have fun. Both are important parts of the Ubuntu community.
Thanks to everyone involved in keeping these important communities running.
Why no one talks about Ubuntu Answer team? https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-answer
The Ubuntu Forums drive me crazy. So much of that content belongs in the Community Wiki, but instead is maintained as occasionally-updated guides in the first post of a thread — which then become totally obsolete when the original author disappears, and remain uneditable by other users.
Of course there’s so much credit to be given to forum participants who share tips, stories, and help out people who are struggling with Ubuntu, but I think it should be taken as a sign, when the forums are used for such “un-forum-y” purposes, that the Community Wiki needs an overhaul. The Forums are not suited for documentation
Ideally (in my opinion, of course), the Forums, Ask Ubuntu, and the Wiki should each serve clear and distinct purposes, and should be part of a “suite” of online support tools that are aware of each other and help guide users to the appropriate place for their involvement.
Ask Ubuntu is clearly a better platform for having questions asked/answered/looked up, and the Wiki is clearly a better platform for documentation. I think it’s such a positive change that Ask Ubuntu questions have begun outranking Forum threads in search engine results. But I hardly ever see Wiki pages in those results.
It seems to me that users should be able to look to these places for support, in this order:
1) Desktop help 2) Official online documentation 3) Community Wiki 4) Ask Ubuntu 5) Ubuntu Forums
As an Ubuntu user for three years, I’ve only used the last two for nearly all of my support needs (and Ask Ubuntu only within the last year or so, of course).
What can be changed about the Community Wiki so that it serves the purposes of documentation better than the Forums?
The wiki has been a longstanding issue that we’re looking to fix. Michael Hall is experimenting with SUMO (what mozilla uses for support.mozilla.org).
Any help in this area would be appreciated, see the ubuntu-doc team list:

While I agree Jorge I feel obligated to remind people too that the problem he stated above is both very real AND not a technological one, its a processes and training problem that wont simply be solved by switching/using another tool or even just improving the ones we have alone.
Well, I think making the whole help.u.c experience more pleasant to use will lead to people actually wanting to help instead of just giving up on bothering trying to fix the wiki.
SUMO is for the win…. I support this initiative of mhall119’s

I use ubuntu 11.10 and would like chromium home page to appear on my desktop when I log on to my pc
Also, I almost forgot about this: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DocumentationTeam/Wiki/Tasks/Forum/import
I don’t know how I found it at the time, but it seems like something that should be much more active. The wiki just feels like a dense forest of mostly-orphaned pages.
I have tried to install ubuntu 11.4 cd to oracle vm box but it gives a message that the “Host SMBus controller is not enabled” and sometimes BIOS needs updating. I am new in this field and need some suggestions please. The CD was checked and found error free!
