You know, I hate social networks. But…I now have a Facebook account. If you have one and feel like we should be connected, go ahead.
I still hate social networks. I consider this an experiment. π

Just in time for the MS buyout? http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=40970
Social networks have their place. They are good for the non-geeks who will never have a ‘proper’ blog. I play with a couple, including Facebook, but prefer to use my blog and a few other services such as del.icio.us and last.fm. Redhat’s Mugshot is a nice aggregator. The big benefit of SNs is when you can restrict access to certain items. That’s a big plus when I want to post pictures of my family that I don’t want the whole world to see.
Hah, I was just about to go ahead and add you, but then I realised you have no idea I even exist. I blame blogging for these dodgy one-way relationships!
Sellout
I have to disagree with Steve. Yes, they are good for non-geeks who don’t like to have a stand-alone blog, but the implication that geeks who use it are somehow substandard is neither fair nor accurate. The difference between a social networking site and a blog — from my perspective, at least — is that the former is dependent on adding friends and interacting with them, whereas the latter is focused more on publishing content and sometimes letting your friends (and sometimes random strangers, case-in-point) view and comment it. The difference is small, but significant.
To a real geek, of course, using the right tools for the job at hand is a great idea. I applaud you, Jono for getting a Facebook account. You probably won’t check it every day, but it is a good way to keep up-to-date with goings-on in your social circles. (If nothing else, it’s a good way to placate your significant other, who might have been bugging you to get one for some time). I think you might notice old classmates (usually the ones you didn’t like, unfortunately) adding you after some length of time.
Try mugshot too, it nicely aggregates various social networking sites.
I figure once you give in and join one of them you may as well try out others too.
Weird, I thought you hated the winky smiles too…
I like what else matches when you search for your name.
…and, of course, blogs are integral in social networks. π
Sell out! π‘
