In Chapter 10 of People Powered, I talk about hiring the right kinds of expertise into your organization. Here are sample role descriptions, based on real roles I have written and shared with clients.

Director Of Community Role

###COMPANY### is building a world-class ###COMMUNITYNAME### community. We believe that ###COMPANY### is the very best place to build great communities and we want to ensure we can provide the very best support, guidance, and engagement to help the ###COMMUNITYNAME### community be successful. This will involve engagement in workflow, product, outreach, events, and more.

As Director of Community, you will lead, coordinate, and manage our global community development initiatives. You will use your community leadership experience to shape our community experience and infrastructure, feed into the product roadmap with community needs and requirements, build growth and engagement, and more. You will help connect, celebrate, and amplify the community and company work in ###COMMUNITYNAME### and assist new communities as they form. You will help our users to think bigger, be the best they can be, and succeed more. You’ll work across teams within ###COMPANY### to promote the community’s voice within our different internal teams. You should be a content expert, superb communicator, and humble facilitator.

Typical activities for this role include:

  • Building and executing programs that grow the ###COMMUNITYNAME### community and empower contributors to do great work.
  • Taking a structured approach to community roles, on-boarding, and working with our teams to ensure community members have a simple and powerful experience.
  • Developing content that promotes the longevity and sustainability of fast growing, organically built communities with high impact outcomes.
  • Competitive analysis to assess how we can always lead the industry with powerful, engaged, thoughtful, and surprising community engagement and strategy.
  • Building relationships within the industry and community to be their representative for ###COMMUNITYNAME### in helping to engage, be successful, and deliver great work and collaboration.
  • Working with product, engineering, and marketing teams on product roadmaps for community features and needs.
  • Being active in other communities and platforms to help foster collaboration and relationships with other communities and organizations.

Experience with the following is required:

  • 5-7 years of experience participating in and building communities.
  • Experience with working in open source and other online communities.
  • Public speaking, blogging, and content development.
  • Facilitating complex and sensitive community management situations with humility, judgment, tact, and humor.
  • Integrating company brand, voice, and messaging into developed content.
  • Working independently and autonomously, managing multiple competing priorities.

Experience with any of the following preferred:

  • 3-5 years of experience leading community management programs within a software or Internet-based company.
  • Media training and experience in communicating with journalists, bloggers, and other media on a range of technical topics.
  • Existing network from a diverse set of communities and social media platforms.
  • Software development capabilities and experience

Community Advocate Role

###COMPANY### is looking for an enthusiastic, experienced, passionate developer advocate. If you understand the nuances of how software is built, can inspire in-person and online audiences, and can work across different communities and departments, we would love to hear from you.

At ###COMPANY###, our developer advocates wear many hats to win the hearts and minds of software teams. In this role, you’ll foster and build networks with developers, devops, engineering managers, and more. You will work closely with our community management, engineering, and product teams to help us present our products in the highest impact way possible. You will be a great public speaker, writer, and be comfortable operating across different media and environments. You will help us to produce compelling content, campaigns, and collateral. You’ll enable a broader community of technologists across events, content, media, campaigns, and more. 

We don’t just want someone who will bounce from event to event parroting the same message. We want someone who can really understand the needs of our audience, serve them, and build a relationship. New and prospective customers and community members will depend on you to help them truly understand the value we offer, and how they can harness it. This work will play a critical role in the broader success of the company.

Typical activities for this role include:

  • Providing engagement and outreach focused on growing the ###COMMUNITY### community and empowering them generate value and do great work.
  • Travelling extensively to speak at conferences, meetups, customer meetings, and more.
  • Developing content that promotes engagement with developers, solving their problems, and using the product.
  • Competitive analysis to assess how we can always lead the industry with powerful, engaged, thoughtful, and surprising advocacy and engagement.
  • Building relationships within the industry and community to be their representative for ###COMMUNITY### in helping to engage, be successful, and deliver great work and collaboration.
  • Working with product, engineering, and marketing teams to help support your and their success.
  • Integrating company brand, voice, and messaging into developed content and representing that brand well.
  • Being active in other communities and platforms to help foster collaboration and relationships with other communities and organizations.

  • Excellent public speaking, writing, blogging, and content development skills.
  • Facilitating complex and sensitive community situations with humility, judgment, tact, and humor.
  • Working independently and autonomously, managing multiple competing priorities.

Experience with any of the following preferred:

  • 5+ years of experience leading community advocacy programs.
  • Prior developer experience, preferably working on an infrastructure project
  • Existing network from a diverse set of communities and social media platforms.
  • Media training and experience in communicating with journalists, bloggers, and other media on a range of technical topics.
